Aim

The programme aims to produce graduates with advanced general and specialised business knowledge in the leadership and management field with additional appropriate skills that can be applied to a range of operational roles, in a ethical manner, in a bi and multi-cultural environment.

The target learner groups for this programme are:

  • Learners who wish to acquire general and specialist business knowledge and skills in the Core and Leadership and Management strand of the qualification to enable them to contribute to the achievement of an entities strategic objectives
  • Graduates of Level 5 business qualifications who wish to build on those qualifications in the Core and Leadership and Management strand of the Level 6 qualification
  • Graduates of other disciplines who wish to acquire general and specialised business knowledge and skills in the Core and Leadership and Management strand of the Level 6 business qualification
  • Domestic, or International students, or those whose English is not their first language, who meet one of the target groups above.
 
Course Length:44 weeks
Course Hours:Full-time (20 hours per week)
Total Credits:120 credits
Course Entry Level:Applicants over 20 years of age will be assessed as to their likely ability to succeed in the programme given any existing qualifications, work experience and motivation to enter the programme.

Applicants under 20 years of age will have completed a level 5 qualification in business.

Students whose first language is not English will also have to meet NZQA criteria for existing English proficiency such as our New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Level 4) or an overall Academic IELTS of 6.0 with no band below 5.5

Course Content

The programme design meets the needs of learners and other stakeholders by providing the general and specialist knowledge and skills required in the Qualifications Conditions for the Level 6 New Zealand Diploma in Business (Leadership and Management strand).

The programme is course based and 120 credits of study consisting of eight compulsory courses (papers) of 15 credits each as set out below:

601 Strategic Planning

Provides technical knowledge and skills for strategic planning, including environmental analysis, formulating and choosing strategic options, writing strategic objectives, the monitoring and control of strategic planning, formulating organisational vision and communicating that vision to engage internal and external stakeholders to meet the strategic purpose statement of the qualification and the relevant GPO’s.

602 Financial Management

Provides technical knowledge and skills in relation to capital budgeting, evaluating investment decisions, the application of financial ratios, financial forecasting, capital structure, cost of capital, management accounting techniques to meet the strategic purpose statement of the qualification and the relevant GPO’s.

603 Human Resource Management

Provides technical knowledge and skills in relation to the appointment of staff, staff development, performance management, including appraisal and reward structures, motivation, organisational culture, and the contribution of HRM to the strategic direction of organisations to meet the strategic purpose statement of the qualification and the relevant GPO’s.

604 Operation Management

Provides technical knowledge and skills in relation to quality management, performance planning, capacity and inventory management, and supply chain management to meet the strategic purpose statement of the qualification and the relevant GPO’s.

605 Strategic Marketing

Provides technical knowledge and skills to explore strategic marketing options for a small business and the formulation of a strategic marketing plan to meet the strategic purpose statement of the qualification and the relevant GPO’s.

606 Leadership

provides technical knowledge and skills in relation to theories and models of leadership, the achievement of personal and organisational goals, and the leadership of change to meet the strategic purpose statement of the qualification and the relevant GPO’s.

607 Business Environment

provides technical knowledge and skills in relation to the bi-cultural partnership with Maori, internal and external regulation and compliance, the global international environment, and the management of risk in both domestic and international settings to meet the strategic purpose statement of the qualification and the relevant GPO’s.

608 Applied Management Project

Focuses on the management of innovation and change, using project management techniques to successfully complete a group student project that will draw on other knowledge and skills previously taught in the programme to meet the strategic purpose statement of the qualification and the relevant GPO’s.

  • Apply knowledge and skills in strategic planning to achieve the strategic objectives of an entity

  • Analyse and apply financial information to make informed forecasts for the efficient and effective performance of an entity

  • Select and use appropriate skills in operations management to improve the efficient and effective performance of an entity

  • Produce a strategic marketing plan for a small business

  • Apply knowledge and skills of leadership to improve the efficient and effective performance of an entity

  • Analyse key components of the national and international business environment and apply knowledge and skills for the efficient and effective performance of an entity

  • Apply research techniques, problem solving skills, and project management techniques to produce major innovation or recommend an process of change to implement innovation in an organisation
